FOREWORDExtended biographies of General Lee, detailing his military operations, have been published. This small volume is intended to present in a brief and convenient form an account of his life, with some items that are not generally familiar, along with sketches and pictures of other members of his family. Many additional items are tabulated for ready reference in the Chronology. For assistance by numerous individuals I am very grateful, and to Dr. George Bolling Lee (now deceased) of New York City, Dr. Hazel Davis of Arlington, Va., Mr. Foster Mohrhardt and Miss Martha R. Cullipher, Librarians, and Professor Earle K. Paxton of Washington and Lee University, I make special acknowledgment; also to Messrs. Doubleday & Company, Inc., of New York City for permission to make quotations from “Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee,” by Captain Robert E. Lee, and to Messrs. Garrett & Massie of Richmond for permission to quote from Henry Boley’s “Lexington in Old Virginia.” A photograph of Stratford Hall, Westmoreland County, Va., General Lee’s birthplace, reproduced in the Frontispiece, was supplied by the Robert E. Lee Memorial Foundation of Stratford; Mr. and Mrs. William B. Watkins kindly provided a photograph of their beautiful home, Annfield, in Clarke County, Va., the birthplace of Mrs. Lee; and Mrs. Rose MacDonald Skoggs of Berryville, Va., author of “Mrs. Robert E. Lee,” published in 1939 by Messrs. Ginn and Company. LIST OF PICTURESStratford Hall MAPSStratford Hall and Environs |
